You Just Might Like It

On a recent trip to Baton Rouge, LA with my mother and aunt to see my sister, I was coaxed into going on a garden tour of an old plantation. In my defense, I offered not to go at all (as this garden tour was definitely not my thing) but they promised it would be. Upon arrival, they all of a sudden want to tour the plantation home as well. If you know me at all, you can picture eyes rolling and a pout coming on. I was NOT up for 2 hours of walking around looking at uninteresting things. After I told them that this was a very mean trick, I made the conscious decision not to be a jerk all day about it. I'm not going to lie, the garden tour was a snooze to me, but I survived. After lunch, we went on the plantation tour through a house built in the 1700's. Much to my surprise, I actually really enjoyed it! There were so many interesting facts that I never knew about, like why oak trees were planted in a row (to allow the breeze to funnel into the house) and how tiny people were back then (women were under 5 feet).
So, the world actually didn't come to an end because a few hours of my afternoon were hijacked from me. This led me to think about all of the things in Meridian that I never tried because I thought I wouldn't like it. This is where I heard the echo of my mother saying "how do you know unless you try it?". I don't think it's just me that isn't trying things either. There are fun and interesting things going on all of the time that most of our community hasn't experienced and doesn't realize how much they might enjoy. I plan to go to the Sucarnochee Revue soon because I never made the effort to attend. I guess I thought it didn't sound like something I'd enjoy. Only, that's ridiculous because I love every kind of music. I was standing in my own way because of some image I put into my head.
So if I'm this way, then certainly others are too. You think you would enjoy these events, but you just don't get off the couch or break your routine to do them. As you read, does this seem familiar to you? The funny thing about trying new things is, that almost every time (at least for me) I end up having such a great time and am so glad I went. So why am I stopping myself? Like I said, I think it's breaking the routine. It's time to branch out and try new things. I'm not just talking to myself here either. I challenge everyone else in our community to try something new. So much is going on here... go try it out! Create your own Meridian area bucket list. You might even like it.
Let me know what you are planning to experience!
