Transportation

We have been recognized as having the fifth-best highway system in the US and the best among Southeastern states. That has contributed to our ranking as also having a very competitive market for freight. Four rail carriers serve our city. Two are major Class I railroads, Norfolk Southern and Kansas City Southern, and two are short-line railroads, Meridian Southern and Meridian & Bigbee. The Meridian Regional Airport's 10,003-foot runway, with two instrument landing system approaches, is the longest public-use runway in the state. The airport provides commercial air service by American Eagle ExpressJet. Meridian Aviation, the local airport fixed base operator for general aviation, offers both fuel and maintenance services on a 16-hour-a-day schedule.
