In 2015, while Meridianites were enjoying dining at the new IHOP, disaster struck and a drainage culvert collapsed in the parking lot. Twelve cars disappeared into the hole which was about 35 feet wide, 375 feet long and 30 feet deep, authorities said. Waggoner Engineering was able to work with City leaders to fix the problem by securing funds from NRCS, the National Resources Conservation Service of Mississippi. They designed a suitable culvert box replacement and implemented the repairs to put it back together.
Joe Waggoner founded Waggoner Engineering in 1976, in Jackson, MS, as a civil engineering firm with a passion for helping communities realize their potential. Over 40 years later, Waggoner has expanded throughout the Mid-South with 11 offices in four states, and an office in Washington, D.C. Waggoner offers clients a unique perspective on capital funding, implementation, and program management strategies, combined with a wide array of traditional engineering services. A trusted partner to their clients, Waggoner helps them secure strategic funding and navigate complex issues to implement projects that transform communities and regions. They offer a broad array of capabilities and an even broader approach to implementing them.
“There is no substitute for hard work,” says Ayad M. Taofik, Senior Project Manager/Client Account Manager. “You are happier and more satisfied when you work hard to get your company going by doing
everything from coming in early to leaving after everyone else has gone. We enjoy doing business in Meridian because it’s rewarding when we take on the role of planning, designing and implementing projects that will ultimately deliver positive results. We have worked with the city on storm water, sewer, and bridge projects which are important to the day-to-day survival and operation of the community.”
He continued, “We joined the chamber, in part, to get to know the community better, and to volunteer our time to help improve the business climate of the Lauderdale County area. Being a member helps us network with local industries.”
Five years after the culvert collapsed at IHOP, evidence of the sinkhole has disappeared. This is an example of the role Waggoner takes and contributes to infrastructure building in communities for the safety and welfare of the people and the development of the community.
