Monoclonal Antibody Infusion Treatment for COVID-19… it’s a phrase most people have heard but many aren’t sure what it means. Simply put, this treatment provides antibodies that mimic your body’s natural immune response. It puts a “fast-forward” on your ability to fight COVID-19 in the first few days of infection while your immune system is gearing up.
The Outpatient Antibody Infusion Center at Anderson Regional Medical Center- South was opened in December 2020 and has provided this free treatment to over 1,000 individuals since that time. The antibodies are given through an IV or shot in an outpatient clinic setting.
This treatment is proven to reduce the risk of hospitalization and death from COVID-19 by 70%, and it shortens the duration of symptoms by about four days. The criteria for antibody infusion are as follows:
- Positive COVID-19 test
- Mild (not severe) symptoms
- 12 years or older
- Weighs at least 88 pounds
