One hundred and sixteen years ago, 1904, Henry Stanhope Badcock founded the W.S. Badcock Corporation in Mulberry, Florida. He built furniture and delivered it with his horse and buggy to customers. He would give them the furniture on their word, and they would make payments. He sold the store to his son, Wogan, in 1920, and business continued to grow until the depression. Mr. Badcock then came up with the idea of selling his furniture to stores on consignment. Next, he started salesmen on routes, using small trucks to sell the merchandise. The idea of easy, fair credit was a novel concept at the time, and Badcock was a forerunner in the way that most merchandise transactions are handled today. W.S. She truly appreciated being given an opportunity,” adds Decanter.
