Honor the Story, Nurture the Spirit, Care for a Lifetime

Omaha Beach is a landing in northern France, used by Allied forces in the WWII D-Day invasion.  The assault on Omaha Beach encountered numerous difficulties and almost ended in a real disaster.  At the price of heavy losses, the Americans finally emerged victorious.  A 99 year old army veteran and resident of Bedford Care Center was one of the brave men who stormed Omaha Beach that day.  He was honored by a skype call from the governor last year, thanking him for his service.  At Bedford Care Centers, their mission, every day, is to honor their residents and provide peace of mind to their families.  It is important to them to honor the history and legacy of their residents.  By taking the time to know their life story, they can better care for each of them.

Bedford Care Center strives to provide a nurturing environment for their residents where they can thrive physically, emotionally and spiritually.  It is their desire to care for the whole person.  The number one complaint from nursing home residents is boredom.  Therefore, they have an outstanding Activity Team that provides creative group events as well as one-on-one activities.  From craft activities to cooking demonstrations; there is something to interest everyone!

Bedford has a wonderful tool called IN2L, which stands for ‘It’s Never Too Late’.  They call it “Buddy”.  It is an interactive computer screen that can be used to skpe, take virtual travel tours, watch live streaming of bears catching salmon in Alaska, or “attend” a family wedding on the beach or even church services.  Their residents have truly loved the different things that “Buddy” can do.

Bedford Care Center offers Care for a Lifetime.  Whether you are residing there for a long-term or short-term stay, Bedford Care Center seeks to provide support and care that will last you a lifetime.  They offer short-term rehabilitation services that include Physical, Speech, and Occupational Therapy.  They also offer Long-Term Residential Care. One client, currently residing there, is 105 years old!  In the early 1970’s, Mike McElroy founded Bedford Care Center of Hattiesburg.  Throughout the years, seven more facilities joined the Bedford family.  Locations opened in Petal, Picayune, Mendenhall, Newton, three centers in Hattiesburg, and in November of 2008, Bedford Care Center of Marion.

“As a business owner, you must stay connected with the community.  Our local schools and colleges are full of talented students that have great ideas and energy.  Recruit locally.  That way, there is a true commitment to your organization.  Hiring is the most expensive thing a company can do, therefore having a committed staff is essential to any business, but especially the healthcare industry,” says Cathy Bates, MBA, NHA.  “It’s essential for any company to be a part of a community organization, like the Chamber.  Especially during times like these, we have experienced an outpouring of support from our community.  It is so encouraging to our staff to know that the work that we do here is meaningful and appreciated.”

The Nursing Home industry is the second most regulated industry in America, with nuclear plants being the most regulated.  While all skilled nursing facilities must abide by the same state and federal regulations, Bedford is a family owned business which translates into a true family atmosphere for residents and staff.  Having committed staff is one of the most important parts of Bedford’s success.  Usually an unexpected event causes someone to come to a nursing home and having the ability to help residents and families transition into this new phase of life is very reassuring.  One family member said, “Thank you so much for caring for my Dad.  I can sleep well at night knowing that my loved one is safe and cared for at Bedford Care Center of Marion.”
