‘A lawyer’s time and advise are his stock in trade - Abraham Lincoln’
When Leonard Cobb was attending Northeast High School, he really enjoyed his chemistry classes and decided he would be a chemist. But, when he got to Mississippi State, he quickly realized college level chemistry courses were not for him. He played football and baseball at MSU and decided he would be a professional baseball player. He got cut from the team his junior year. He then decided to major in “campus-ology”, with labs every Friday and Saturday night. He had no idea what he would do after college until his brother suggested he study law.
Leonard claims the only thing that got him through law school was the good Lord, determination, and Betsy, since they married during his second year. He worked for District Attorney Joe Clay Hamilton, Harvey Ray and George Warner the summer after his junior year, and Ray and Warner hired him before he finished school. Being from Meridian, (his Dad, M. B. Cobb was Chancery Clerk for 16 years), he returned home to open his practice. He has never regretted his decision to return to Meridian. Warner became Chancery Judge and left the firm at that time. Harvey retired in 1996, and Leonard practiced alone until his son Justin joined him in 2001. In 2015 Justin was appointed Circuit Judge and left the practice.
Leonard has served his community continuously while working in his hometown. He has served as President of the Lauderdale County Bar Association and on the Board of Bar Commissioners of the Mississippi Bar. He was appointed a Fellow of the Mississippi Bar Foundation in 2012, a prestigious honor voted on by other attorneys in the state. An active member of First Baptist Church of Meridian Leonard has served as Chairman of Deacons and is a Sunday School teacher. His community service includes serving on the Salvation Army Board of Directors (Lifetime Award), Boy Scout Advisory Council, past President of Meridian Exchange Club, Instructor at Meridian Community College, Gideons, and the Junior Achievement Board. And, one of his favorite activities, Leonard has also served as President of the Mississippi State Bulldog Club.
For forty years, Leonard has been one of the most sought-after lawyers in town. His areas of expertise are legal counseling, estate planning, administration of estates, real estate title work, loan closings, and corporation setups. His reputation is flawless; he is known for being fair, honest and trustworthy. Leonard says helping the people of Meridian has given him great satisfaction. Whether helping them through the loss of a loved one or enjoying their excitement when buying their dream home, he has enjoyed being their attorney.
When starting your own business, he advises, make sure you are properly capitalized and don’t overextend. Be committed and properly supervise your business. Join the chamber. They help support the business community and with our help, will bring new business to the area. He believes word of mouth and satisfied clients are the best advertisement, and he has a drawer full of thank you cards to prove it!
Leonard says, “I look forward to continuing to serve my community and serving you as your attorney. Our office is here to help you!”
