‘I was born with music inside me.  Music was one of my parts.  Like my ribs, my kidneys, my liver, my heart.  Like my blood.  It was a force already within me when I arrived on the scene.  It was a necessity for me – like food or water.’  When Ray Charles spoke these words, he echoed what is within many of us; that vital need for music.  Dan Confait, owner of DC Guitar Studio, knew exactly what Mr. Charles was talking about.

Confait opened his first studio in Madison, MS, in March, 2014, with 1500 square feet of studio space and 15 students.  Within six months, he had 70 students.  In September, 2016, he expanded, needing 3000 square feet with 6 lesson rooms to teach his 200 students!  In October 2019, he moved back to Meridian, his hometown, and opened DC Guitar Studio with 7 lesson rooms.  They sell mandolins, banjos, ukuleles, drums, guitars and amps, etc., and they offer lessons on every instrument they sell, as well as vocal and piano lessons.  They also teach rock band, and have a performance based studio where students play together.

When opening your own business, Dan says to work hard and stick to your game plan.  Believe in yourself, because others will doubt you.  And being in the chamber helps get your name out there.  It’s a great program to be part of; meeting and networking with people you wouldn’t normally see.

“Growing up in Meridian, guitar players were my heroes and I wanted to learn to play just like them.  That resulted in me playing and traveling all over the country.  I got married, had kids, and couldn’t really do that so much anymore.  I decided to settle down and I wanted to teach this love of music to other people,” he says.  “Seeing your students progress, and perform for the love of music is so rewarding.”  Dan Confait says, “Don’t just play, make music.”

Jimi Hendrix said: ‘Music doesn’t lie.  If there is something to be changed in this world, then it can only happen through music.’  Spoken by a real guitar hero.
