‘Under all is the land. Upon its wise utilization and widely allocated ownership depend the survival and growth of free institutions and of our civilization. Realtors should recognize that the nation’s citizens require the creation of adequate housing, the building of functioning cities, the development of productive industries and farms, and the preservation of a healthful environment.’ (Excerpt from Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice of the National Association of Realtors)
The standing charter of East Mississippi Realtors was issued in 1939 by the National Association of Realtors to nine founding Meridian members. These businessmen wanted to be held to a higher standard in their real estate practices and The National Association of Realtors was founded on those principles. The founding members’ belief in ethical conduct came long before real estate law and licensing. The National Association of Realtors Code of Ethics was the model used for future license law. In 1954, MS became the 40th state to pass a law requiring the licensing of real estate brokers and salespeople. The term Realtor, has come to connote competency, fairness, and high integrity resulting from adherence to these lofty ideals outlined in the preamble to the Realtor Code of Ethics. Meridian area Realtors have been a leader in higher real estate standards of conduct for over 80 years.
What makes East Mississippi Realtors unique is that they are not a real estate firm. Their focus is on relationships with the community, business, and their Realtors. They provide services for Realtors to conduct business, such as the Multiple Listing service (MLS), the lockbox system, copyrighted contracts and forms, and continuing education and compliance with the Code of Ethics. They are a member based local chapter of the National Association of Realtors. Their members (Realtors) are licensed in real estate and appraisal. They also foster relationships with their Affiliate members who are part of the real estate process such as lenders, attorneys, insurance agents, home inspectors, landscapers, etc. They currently have 132 Realtors and 53 Affiliates in memberships. They serve 5 counties, Neshoba, Newton, Kemper, Clarke, and Lauderdale with a high concentration in Lauderdale County.
“We are the only voice for homeowners in the legislature and we take that very seriously,” says Betty Oltremari, Executive Officer. “Meridian area Realtors rank among the highest in the state for their involvement and support of the issues that affect homeowners such as the expansion of broadband internet, protecting homeowners and businesses from frivolous lawsuits (premise liability act) and expanding background checks for all applicants of real estate licenses. We scan over 3,000 bills every session making sure bills that hurt homeowners are defeated and bills that help homeowners get passed.”
But just as important is their commitment to the community. By providing grants to MUTEH (Mississippians united to end homelessness), locating safe housing for Care Lodge clients, providing a library and uniform vouchers to the Boys & Girls Club, providing school supplies for children of Hope Village, and participating in Backpack Give Back for foster kids, they are giving back. By being a member of the Chamber, they support local business as well as invest in Meridian/Lauderdale County’s future, and help in any way they can with economic development in the East Mississippi area. By these endeavors, they are upholding the honor and dignity of their profession.
