Pray, Believe, and Never Give Up!
Evangel Temple founder, the late Pastor Melvin Boles, began preaching in 1959 in a storefront in downtown Meridian on 18th Street and 33rd Avenue. He began holding tent revivals in Clarke and Lauderdale Counties and surrounding areas. He then built a small church in the southside district of Meridian and moved from there to Tuxedo in 1971. In 1978, he felt the Lord tell him to build on a hill. Searching for that hill led him to Highway 145 South. He immediately began to tear down buildings, using the old brick for the building of the new church. It was completed and the ministry grew. Children’s and youth ministry began. The choir and the music ministry saw God do great things, one being their first recordings. That first building became the Children’s Church, a youth building was added and now a $21 million multi-complex houses the sanctuary and drama theater.
In 1988, drama productions were started by Mike Boles, Melvin’s son, and drew thousands of people from all over the Southeast. Evangel Temple’s people write and direct original drama productions depicting both Biblical stories and modern-day stories with Biblical themes. Since they began the drama ministry over 33 years ago, they have written and performed more than 10 original drama productions and seen over 100,000 people come to salvation through Christ Jesus. In 1998, leadership of Evangel Temple was handed down to Pastor Mike Boles, current pastor.
New things keep happening at Evangel Temple. “Our Sunday services will soon launch on international television each week through GodTV,” says Pastor Mike Boles. “And a group from our church recently began a ministry called “Taking it to the Streets” that set up outside of partner businesses to pray and
minister to hurting people in our community each week. We support Meridian and surrounding areas and want to see our community grow and prosper. We pray often for our city, elected officials, law enforcement and other leaders. We belong to the chamber because we enjoy ministering in a small town with good, friendly people, and being involved with the business community.”
Evangel Temple believes in preaching the truth of the Gospel with love. They hold Sunday School, Worship Service, Youth and Children’s Ministries and multiple Prayer Services each week. The ladies’ prayer meeting, started by the late Sister Rosie Boles, wife of founding pastor Melvin Boles and mother of Pastor Mike Boles, has been meeting every Tuesday morning to pray for the needs of the church body and community for more than 40 years. Sunday morning services and Wednesday evening prayer services are also live streamed on their website and Facebook page.
Evangel Temple Church is non-denominational with a diverse body of believers. The heart of its ministry centers on prayer, God’s Word, His Son Jesus Christ, and The Holy Spirit. Everyone is welcome to worship here. As one guest said, “You can feel the love of Christ; truly God has blessed this place.”
