Marriott, Travel Brilliantly
It all began, in 1927, with an A&W root beer stand. Founder J. Willard Marriott and his wife, Alice, got their young business off the ground by quenching people’s thirst during Washington D.C.’s hot, muggy summers. Alice saw the need to add hot food items to their menu, and they then opened the East Coast’s first drive-in restaurant. Noticing people buying snacks and drinks before boarding airplanes at a neighboring airport, they went into airline catering with Eddie Rickenbacker, head of Eastern Airlines! They shifted into the hotel business in 1957 and with the acquisition of 49% interest in The Ritz-Carlton Company, are now the largest hotel chain in the world. Marriott International has 30 brands, 7,484 properties in 131 countries and territories around the world, with a total of 1,400,693 hotel rooms, and more than 700,000 employees. 1987 saw the opening of the Marriott’s first Fairfield Inn, and 28 years later, Fairfield Inn came to Meridian, the only Marriott hotel in town.
The Fairfield Inn and Suites Meridian is under new management. Tanneasha Camel has joined the ranks as General Manager. Tanneasha has over 17 years of Marriott focus service experience and brings tremendous knowledge of the business to the hotel. Tanneasha has spent the past decade in the Metro Jackson market. Jeremy Campbell joined the team earlier this summer as the Area Director of Sales over the sales operations at both the Fairfield Inn and Suites and the Courtyard by Marriott Threefoot, opening soon. Jeremy has been providing lodging solutions to area corporations, special events, conference and conventions for the last 12 years. Both Camel and Campbell will be spear heading the operations of the Courtyard Marriott Threefoot.
The historic Threefoot Building in downtown Meridian is being transformed into a Courtyard by Marriott hotel, with 131 rooms. The Threefoot Building was completed in 1930 and was the tallest building in Mississippi at the time. It has been designated a Mississippi Landmark. The 16-story hotel will have a 2,700 square foot rooftop bar, bistro and Starbucks, with an unimpeded view of the city. The roof will house a kitchen and pizza oven and food and beverages will also be available on the ground floor.
“The hospitality business has taken a major hit during COVID. People have been and are reluctant to travel. As for us, we have a couple who were in town on business and have been apprehensive about returning to Texas. They have called the Fairfield Inn Meridian home since March. They told us, paraphrasing Maya Angelou, ‘people will forget what you did for them, but they will never forget how you make them feel’….and they feel right at home at The Fairfield Inn,” Jeremy relates, “and we agree. Meridian just feels like home, and the Meridian business community is one that supports each other. Belonging to the Chamber provides so many networking opportunities to help us grow our businesses.”
The Fairfield Inn and Suites Meridian/Courtyard Marriott Threefoot will never stop searching for inventive ways to serve their customers, provide opportunities for their associates and grow their business. The company that began as a nine-seat A&W root beer stand is recognized today for its superior business operations as a mega-giant in the hotel industry.
