Hall Timberlands

Growing Mississippi’s Future

“My grandfather, Maurice H. Hall, Sr., bought his first piece of timberland in Clarke County in 1938. He used the income from the timber harvests on that property to buy additional land and we have continued that business model, growing from 250 acres in 1938 to just over 60,000 acres currently. We still own that original piece of property today,” states David Hall, President and CEO of Hall Timberlands. Hall used to own and operate three sawmills, including one in Meridian that was located on the current Meridian Coca-Cola Bottling Company site. Although the majority of their timberland is located in surrounding counties, they have kept their business office in Meridian for almost 50 years.

Hall Timberlands has been in continuous operation for over 80 years with three generations of family leadership and are actively teaching the 4th generation; so they can follow in those same footsteps. They manage their timber on a much longer rotation length of 45-50 years compared to most timberland owners that manage on a rotation length of 25-30 years. This means when they plant a tree, it will have the opportunity to grow for up to 50 years. That allows them to produce larger trees used for more specialized products like plywood and utility poles.

Hall continues, “Meridian may be a small town but it offers opportunities that rival many larger cities. Convenient access to various transportation options of rail, air, and interstate highway; great medical facilities with two major hospitals; advanced educational opportunities and workforce training with MSU and MCC, enhance life in this area. Entertainment facilities like the Riley Center, MAX, and the new Mississippi Children’s Museum-Meridian; great food and of course the people of this area, make it a great place to work and live.”

“In business, you have to be prepared for challenges; don’t be afraid of them. Get involved in the community in as many ways as possible, particularly by joining the EMBDC. Their core mission of business development is the primary driving force behind building, growing, and improving our community. Something my grandfather strongly believed in and instilled in our family’s and company’s culture, is to give back in every way you can. That will lead to success for you, your business, and the community around you.”

Customers say Hall Timberlands have some of the most beautiful and well managed timberlands they have ever seen. Their vision is this:  We believe in stewardship, conservation and nurture of the forest – planting more than we harvest and reinvesting for the future. We believe in maximizing real value by maintaining a perpetual, sustainable forest, a diverse canopy of trees, teeming with animals, birds, clear streams, and yielding wood products that provide fuel, shelter and useful materials.
