Illuminations Center for Dyslexia

We help you THINK differently about dyslexia, IMAGINE a future of success, and CREATE a plan to make that happen.

Whoopi Goldberg, Tom Cruise, Keira Knightley, Albert Einstein, Cher, Steven Spielberg, Walt Disney, Leonardo da Vinci, Danny Glover, Magic Johnson, and Jennifer Anniston are just a few of the famous people who have achieved much even though having dyslexia.

If your child has difficulty reading, especially reading aloud, writes or reads slowly and with great effort, has problems spelling, mispronounces names or words, has problems retrieving words, or avoids activities that involve reading, they may be dyslexic. Dyslexia is a learning disorder and occurs in children with normal vision and intelligence.

Illuminations Center for Dyslexia offers dyslexia therapy services as well as quality tutoring services both in-person and online. They craft individualized plans to fit student needs and family schedules and budgets. They are a non-profit and can offer aid to families that qualify. The Illuminations Center for Dyslexia was established in May of 2013. They started in the basement of Pleasant Hill Methodist Church in Zero, MS, and moved to their present location in Clearpoint on Highway 39 in 2015. They have served over 500 students since their inception.

Illuminations is still the only private dyslexia therapy provider in East Mississippi and West Alabama with licensed dyslexia therapists. All therapists at Illuminations have received training in structured literacy methods in a supervised practicum in excess of 800 clinical hours. They use individualized Orton-Gillingham materials from various programs including Neuhaus Education, Wilson Reading, Alphabetic Phonics, and Kendore Learning. Each lesson is individually planned and based on student’s unique needs within the structured scope and sequence recommended by the International Dyslexia Association.

In addition to their primary mission to teach children to read, write, and spell, they also offer a variety of tutoring services. They work to increase teacher and parent knowledge through public forums and professional development in Meridian and the surrounding areas. Advocacy has been effective in changing the way accommodations and modifications have been implemented for students in the public-school setting.

Mississippi leads the nation in laws protecting the rights of students with dyslexia and instructing children in the science of reading. This is evidenced by the 2019 NAEP scores showing that Mississippi is the only state to show growth in 4th grade literacy scores.

“I believe in Meridian and want it to grow. I believe small businesses are the lifeblood of our community and without participation, we lose our representation. That’s why Illuminations is a member of the chamber. We are tied to this community through our work and by our commitment to improving the educational outcomes for our children. We have been providing dyslexia therapy for 12 YEARS! Though the non-profit wasn’t finalized until 2013, we started working with dyslexic children in 2009,” states Leta Palmiter, Ed.S, CALT, SLDS, Executive Director. She proudly adds, “My first students have graduated from college!”
