What is the history of dry cleaning and where did it start? As long as people have had clothes, they’ve been washing clothes. In 1845, Frenchman Jean-Baptiste spilled kerosene on a dirty tablecloth. When the kerosene dried, the stains were gone. He created a cleaning service and first used the term “dry cleaning” to describe his waterless process. Unfortunately, this process caused many fires and explosions resulting in dry cleaners changing to chlorinated solvents. Not only safer, but they got clothes cleaner.

Today we have Jones Cleaners, in Meridian, Mississippi, a full-service dry cleaning and laundry service. They have been in business since 1940 and locally owned and operated since that time. The family of the original owners from 1940 are still the accountants for the business today. They are very vested in the success of the Cleaners and are huge supporters of the business. The success Jones has enjoyed over the years can be attributed to two simple business strategies. First, make sure you have a quality product. It is important that each customer is happy with your workmanship. And second, treat people as friendly as possible.
