Meridian Architectural Trust

Saving Meridian’s story, one building at a time.

Created in early 2021, Meridian Architectural Trust (MAT) is the only city-wide historic preservation non-profit in the city of Meridian. Promoting preservation in Meridian’s National Register Historic Districts, their business model is based on the highly successful Macon Historic Trust in Macon, Georgia. Educational opportunities, networking, and public awareness campaigns are offered to support these preservation efforts. The highly successful Photo Contest, upcoming Crossroads Conference, and Historic Plaque Program all help bring attention to Meridian’s Historic Buildings and their preservation.

“Historic Preservation should be key to the economic success of both large and small cities, including Meridian. We have received a partial grant to conduct a professional feasibility study to create a master plan for neighborhood revitalization in Meridian. We are interested in preserving small cottages as much as large residences,” states Sarah Seltzer Johnson, President of MAT’s Board.

“We are proud to be a member of the chamber because it promotes working together. We believe a chain is only as strong as its weakest link. Our city will be stronger and more successful if we all work together. We sense a reawakening of pride in Meridian, and a determination to revitalize the place we call home. When we discuss our vision, we see excitement and support in the eyes of the community. It is a pleasure to lead the call to preserve this wonderful architectural environment, and finding partners daily, is a pleasure,” she adds.

From vernacular to modern, from residential to commercial, from governmental to industrial, the built environment is an intrinsic part of a community’s identity. Preserving the buildings of Meridian, Mississippi by educating the public, rehabilitating the structures, and engaging the people, will help create a sense of place, make people feel welcome, and teach the community about our shared past, present and future. This will help create a community that is welcoming, enduring, and livable, now and in the future.
