We are the Icons of Meridian!

Memories of days gone by are alive at Merrehope and F.W. Williams – both historic homes in Meridian, Mississippi. Each home stands as a testament to time, and each speaks volumes about Meridian’s history. Merrehope is one of Meridian’s only remaining Greek Revival homes – standing resolute – despite General William T. Sherman’s Civil War claim that “Meridian no longer stands.” Merrehope was one of only six residences left unburned when General Sherman invaded Meridian during the War Between the States. Merrehope served at one time, as a shelter for Union officers and another time, as headquarters for a Confederate General. Victorian F.W. Williams Home evokes an era of the fashionably rich. Elegant interior decorating details reflect how no expense was spared in its construction. Merrehope, circa 1858, and FW Williams, circa 1896, are both historic homes listed in the National Registry of Historic places and are listed as Mississippi Landmarks.

In 1968, five community women desired to prevent the destruction of a historical landmark. By restoring the house, they could provide cultural, historical and tourism activities as well as provide a community venue for clubs, businesses and organizations to have events. A non-profit was founded and funded by the women of Mississippi Federated Women’s Clubs. For over 52 years, the women of the community have restored and maintained several historic homes and these two are still owned and cared for by the women of the clubs and community.

“We are serving the community as well as providing a unique tourism attraction. We love serving the schools, churches, businesses, and other organizations with hospitality, support and the opportunity to appreciate our history. Through historical tours, event planning, event venues, tourism promotions, cultural and art programs, we enhance opportunities for our community. We belong to the Chamber to support our entire community – and to provide our services for the opportunities they endeavor to create. We want to be a contributing member of their team. We appreciate the EMBDC for what it has done in the past, what it is doing now, and what it will accomplish in the future,” says Betty Lou Jones, President of The Meridian Restoration Foundation.

One visitor to Merrehope said, “These homes mean so much to me as a native Meridianite because they represent the years of growth and hospitality for which my hometown is known. These historic structures showcase the determination and resilience of our people for all of our residents to see and appreciate.” Sentiments like these make the work of the Meridian Restoration Foundation worthwhile. Traditional holiday tours of Merrehope and F.W. Williams historic homes are available now through December 30th.
