Now in its 96th year of operations, Mississippi Power, a subsidiary of Southern Company, produces safe, reliable and affordable energy for more than 190,000 customers in 23 southeast Mississippi counties. The company was recently a recipient of the Community Partner Impact Award from the Center for Energy Workforce Development for its innovative and ongoing efforts to build a diverse workforce. With nearly 160 megawatts of approved solar energy capacity, Mississippi Power is also the largest partner in providing renewable energy in the state of Mississippi.
The company is perhaps best known for its safe, immediate and efficient storm restoration response following severe weather in its service territory. Customers can be assured that the team at Mississippi Power is storm-tested and ready for whatever weather Mother Nature may throw our way.
We’re always working to build a stronger, more reliable power grid for our customers. Smart grid technologies and self-healing networks automatically isolate problems and restore service to affected areas in a matter of seconds, and that gets the lights back on faster for our customers.
To ensure we are prepared in the event of a storm, we are hardening our infrastructure, making physical changes to reduce the impact from storm damage due to high winds, flooding and falling trees. This includes elevating substations in flood-prone areas and installing additional automated devices on the system, so that our grid is less susceptible to impacts from storms.
If your lights do go out, Mississippi Power’s storm team will be ready to work around the clock to safely restore power as quickly as possible, no matter if it’s a hurricane, tornado or an ice storm.
Here are some easy-to-follow severe weather tips to help your family stay prepared year-round:
- Plan now for how you and other family members will contact each other if a storm hits.
- Install a smart phone app that will alert you to severe weather in the area.
- Prepare a storm kit that includes flashlights, batteries, water, nonperishable food items and any essential medications.
- Charge cell phones, tablets and other electronic devices before the severe weather moves in.
- Know how to safely operate your generator.
- After a storm, keep away from loose or dangling power lines. Any power line could be 'hot’ or energized. Report them immediately to Mississippi Power at 800.532.1502.
Now is the time to review your storm plan to ensure your home and family are ready for any
dangerous weather that may impact your area. Mississippi Power customers are also encouraged to sign up for Outage Alerts, which notify you of an outage at your home or business. You will receive another notification when service has been restored.
