Making Jesus Known
When you think of the mission field, many of us immediately think of foreign countries like the Dominion Republic, Uganda, China, and the Philippines, among others. And Northcrest Baptist Church does have ongoing ministries in these locations. But the local mission field, Meridian/Lauderdale County, is served also. The most well-known community-wide mission endeavor is Love out Loud. It has been a tremendous success in serving people’s needs while sharing witness of God’s love for them. In the Bible, Jesus tended to people’s physical problems first, and the love shown through those acts of mercy, opened people’s heart to Christ. Other churches in the area have coordinated with Northcrest in Love out Loud, adding to the number of people reached.
“Northcrest Church was founded in a storefront on 35th Avenue in 1965. We moved into our current location on North Hills Street the next year. Exponential growth led to the construction of our current sanctuary in 1997. Our current pastor, Dr. Dan Lanier, served for 25 years as our staff evangelist before becoming our pastor in 2010. The church has grown from that storefront in the 60’s to its current campus, where we averaged around 1,000 people for services each week before the pandemic hit,” says Wade Phillips, Executive Pastor.
“Northcrest is focused on the Great commission that Jesus gave his disciples in Matthew 28:16-20. We want to make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, the Son, and Holy
Spirit, and teaching them to follow all Jesus’ teachings,” he added. The church does that through a variety of means: regular worship services and Bible studies, opportunities for service, and mission endeavors at home and around the world.
“Our focus is not on what other people think about us – our focus is on what people say about Jesus. If someone comes to one of our services or is served by one of our people and sees how good and great Jesus is, then we have done our job!” Northcrest is a member of the chamber because they want to be a part of the community. “We love the people,” Pastor Phillips states. “We love sharing the gospel and making disciples in this community. We love Meridian and want to see good things happen here!”
