History
Northwood Country Club has grown to be one of the most beautiful country clubs in Mississippi. In the beginning, Northwood Country Club was named the Country Club of Meridian. The club was located on the corner of Poplar Springs Drive and Old Country Club Drive. While the golf course cannot be seen anymore, the original clubhouse still stands. In 1927, a group of members began construction at a location closer to the city and Northwood Country Club officially opened in October 1929. The original clubhouse was a replica of George Washington’s Mt. Vernon and Northwood was one of the most prestigious clubs in the south. Notable professional and amateur golfers visited the club annually for competition and the junior golf program flourished. As newer courses and clubs were built, Northwood became not as well-known across the south. Today, when guests visit Northwood for the first time, the term “hidden gem” is used often to describe the club. They are amazed by the course conditions and the roll and contour of the course which shows the beauty of Meridian.
In 1971, the club was outgrowing the clubhouse and there was a vision of a true country club atmosphere. A new clubhouse was built from a reproduction of a Colorado ski lodge; really unique for Meridian. The new clubhouse helped it become what it is today with amenities that include dining, golf, pool, tennis, pickleball, fitness, live music, and a place for social and private events.
Northwood Today
“Our goal every day is to provide a relaxed and fun atmosphere for people to gather with their friends and family. We want our membership to feel that Northwood Country Club is an extension of their own homes. They can come here without a reservation and find an available first tee on the golf course, dining table, pool area, and tennis court ready for them to enjoy,” says General Manager, Billy Pomeroy.
Northwood is a family-oriented country club. “Our members and their guests have a place for their kids to have fun and feel welcomed, especially during the summer months,” continues Pomeroy. “Northwood has a PGA Golf Professional and a USTA Tennis Professional who both do a great job with instructional programs for kids throughout the year. We offer after school and summer programs, swimming lessons, host junior tournaments, and help the area’s local school teams. We try our best to invest in our kids through sports and fun activities.”
Northwood Country Club’s membership is a very diverse mixture of people from Meridian and people who are not from Mississippi. We offer different membership levels from a full membership that includes all amenities, dining, military, and non-resident memberships. Our membership includes many generational members with grandparents, parents, kids and grandkids as members, members who are from neighboring states, and members from our military community. Everyone brings a unique background that enhances the Northwood membership experience.
One of their greatest compliments is when members want to bring their friends and guests to the club. When a guest is visiting Northwood Country Club, they want them to feel as important as the members. Northwood Country Club relies on great experiences and word of mouth to help promote and continue our growth in membership.
