Bridging the Gap for a Healthy Community
Who is a nurse practitioner? A nurse practitioner is an individual who has undergone medical training and has the capacity to assess a patient’s health, diagnose illness, and prescribe medications to patients. Every nurse practitioner you see has gone through rigorous training focused on the whole person’s general well-being. They serve as the bridge between you and the high cost of healthcare and address the looming primary care shortage. Nurse practitioners are professionals with at least a Master’s Degree in nursing. They undergo 6-8 years of post-secondary education and practical training to become a Nurse Practitioner. They are licensed by the state in Mississippi. Nurse Practitioners can diagnose and treat patients, but need a physician’s oversight to prescribe medications.
In September 2021, Dr. Mary Stewart had a vision to start a family clinic and reached out to Tan Wilson and Erica Glover, whom she had worked with over the years. With the various experiences of each provider, Nurse Practitioner Associates of Meridian was formed in four months. Each provider of NPAM
has over 20 years of experience in multiple medical settings, which makes them not only unique, but well equipped to manage patients from various backgrounds with their medical issues.
NPAM offers wellness visits, routine maintenance and sick visits, DOT exams, sports physicals, specialized geriatrics (age 50 & over), family care for ages 14 and over, x-rays, lab, and referrals to specialists. Mary, Tan and Erica have known each other through work, school, and ministry for over 20 years, with a combined 65 years of experience. They are all alumni of Meridian Public Schools and Meridian Community College. “We are life-long residents of Meridian, and appreciate the opportunity to give back what has been etched into us throughout the years from this community; quality, compassion, dignity and trust. As nurse practitioners we take our time to listen to the patient, a skill inherited from years of bedside experience,” says Dr. Mary. “As a chamber member, we look forward to the chamber supporting the growth of our business by connecting us with other business and industry leaders in our area, as well as expanding our reach in the community. We at NPAM are grateful for the opportunity to serve the community in this capacity. To other business owners we say, never lose hope, even if it appears that the odds are stacked against you. Keep your vision in front of you and don’t stop until it is achieved.”
