Arthritis was the determining factor in the invention of the photocopier. Chester Colson, a shy, soft-spoken patent attorney, who grew up in almost unspeakable poverty and worked his way through junior college and the California Institute of Technology, was also a part-time researcher and inventor. His job at the patent office in New York required him to make a large number of copies of important papers. This was a painful and tedious process due to his arthritis, and led to his invention of a copy machine. In 1938, he applied for a patent for his photocopy experiments. When Carlson tried to sell his invention, he was turned down over 20 times by companies who thought carbon paper was just fine. They passed up the opportunity to manufacture what has been described as “the most successful product ever marketed in America.” This year, the world will produce more than three trillion copied pages.

Southern Duplicating was founded in 1987, by Elvin Yawn and his wife, Debra, in Clarksdale, MS. They literally started as a 2-person operation working out of a shed behind their house. In the last 33 years, they have grown tremendously opening nine branches in two states and have become the largest Kyocera Dealer in Mississippi.
