Hot off the Presses!
The newspaper is as big a part of Americana as Mom and apple pie. Norman Rockwell, magazines, and the comics almost always depicted Dad, after a hard day’s work, at home in his easy chair reading the newspaper.
Newspapers began circulating in the 17th century, with notices of current events or opinions hand-written and posted in public taverns and local churches. That way, they reached the whole population! In churches, the news was read from the pulpit and posted on the church walls. Another common news outlet was the public crier, with “Hear Ye, Hear Ye.” The first American newspaper was printed in 1690 and by the end of the 19th century, newspapers were springing up in cities across the nation. The news industry was suddenly energized when two famous editors, Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst, fought a circulation war that made newspapers a vital part of everyday American life.
Since 1898, The Meridian Star has served the citizens of East Central Mississippi and West Alabama since its founding as The Evening Star. The paper was renamed The Meridian Star in 1915. Founded by Charles Pinckney Dement and his son James Washington Dement, the paper was published each afternoon until early 2005, when morning delivery was implemented. Local newspapers have always been the epicenter of local news everywhere. While communities may have other sources of journalism, such as TV and radio stations and online-only-outlets, the bulk of the reporting serving local communities has traditionally been provided by local newspapers.
The Meridian Star and its products deliver news and information on a wide variety of topics across many platforms. They provide the news and information any way the readers prefer. Their news and sports operations deliver information to the community 24 hours a day, every day of the week, using
digital, newsletters and social media along with the traditional newspaper. The advertising staff can deliver a business’s message across every medium, including print, digital, video and audio. Consider The Meridian Star when you are ready to reach out to the community. Advertising through your own websites and social media is good if your customers already know about you, but a general interest publication and news site will help you reach those who don’t.
“We take pride in being part of the community and providing the information citizens need and want, and information that’s important to them. We enjoy being a cheerleader for the community, but we also know there is information people need to make informed decisions for themselves, their business and the community overall,” says Dave Bohrer, editor. “We belong to the Chamber, with other businesses, because we are part of that community and want to see it succeed. We believe it’s important for all of us to work together.”
The Meridian Star has been recognized statewide and nationally with many press awards including, “Newspaper of the Year.” Bohrer continues, “Our goal is to be the region’s most complete and accurate source of information for and about our community.”
