United Way of East Mississippi

We’ve all played Monopoly and hoped to land on Community Chest, because you would usually wind up with something good.  Community Chests were actual boxes where money pooled from the community for the purpose of charitable giving, was kept locked.  The United way, founded in 1887, was widely called the Community Chest until the 1950’s.

United Way is engaged in nearly 1800 communities across more than 40 countries and territories worldwide.  United Way is focused on creating community-based and community-fed solutions that strengthen the cornerstones for a good quality of life:  education, financial stability and health.  United Way improves lives by mobilizing the caring power of communities around the world to advance the common good.  Each United Way organization is focused on the problems, needs and solutions in the local area.  Derron Radcliff, executive director says, “It’s great to work in Lauderdale County/Meridian because East Mississippi is a giving community.  People give from their hearts and are always willing to advocate as well as volunteer during times of need.  We are a member of EMBDC because they represent the community and we, The United Way, service the needs of the people in our community.  The resources and connections that are provided through the chamber benefit our organization in ways that are priceless.”

Who donated 4,200 books per month through Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library?  You did.  Who helped save local families $375,891 with Familywize prescription discount cards last year?  You did.  And who impacted over 7000 students through the Stuff the Bus School Supply & Uniform Drive?  You did if you gave to The United Way of East Mississippi last year.   By giving to The United Way, one gift can impact the lives of thousands of citizens in Lauderdale, Clarke, Neshoba and Kemper counties.
