Weidmann's
![]() |
In 1870, Felix Weidmann, a Swiss immigrant chef on a transatlantic steam ship, settled in Meridian and opened a restaurant in the Union Hotel consisting of a counter and four stools. It became a success and moved to its present location in 1923, under the ownership of Felix’s grandson, Henry Weidmann. During the 40’s, 50’s, and 60’s, it became nationally known and its reputation as the oldest, most famous restaurant in Mississippi made it a popular tourist attraction. In 1979, Weidmann’s was put on the National Register of Historic Places and this year, 2020, celebrates its 150th birthday!
The historical connection and affection of the community through the years, is an important facet of Weidmann’s success. In the 60’s, Shorty McWilliams and his wife Gloria Weidmann McWilliams owned the restaurant, and in the 80’s, ownership was passed on to Poo Chancellor and his wife Gloria McWilliams Chancellor. In 1999, a group of 56 investors got together, bought the building and restaurant and completely renovated the site. In an effort to save this historic restaurant, it changed the atmosphere and menu to something more modern. Weidmann’s closed briefly in 2010 and reopened almost immediately after being purchased by Charles Frazier. He reopened with the goal of providing outstanding and affordable Southern Cuisine in an historical setting. Many of the old recipes of the original Weidmann’s have been revived while adding new classics. Mouth watering dishes like shrimp and grits, the vegetable plate, shrimp remoulade, fried green tomatoes and of course, black bottom pie head today’s menu.
Another Weidmann’s tradition is the vast collection of photographs; celebrities, employees and local guests, along with artwork by area artists adorn the walls. They are a full-service restaurant with two bars, two private dining areas and offer catering services. Charles says, “We love being downtown. The architecture and the feeling of community ownership present endless possibilities for growth. An active and growing Main Street gets more people downtown and enhances all our businesses. We are a Chamber member because the community business owners help foster the growth and development of our town.”
Weidmann’s is most known for its delectable food, but we cannot fail to mention the second most well-known fact about Weidmann’s, the Peanut Butter Crocks. Each table is set with a handmade peanut butter crock and an assortment of crackers. This tradition dates back to the 1940’s, when legend has it there was a shortage of butter due to WWII. A guest mentioned to Henry Weidmann that peanut butter would be a good replacement to accompany the crackers. Henry embraced the idea and found a potter in Louisville, MS, to make the crocks. They have continued the peanut butter crocks, now being made by a local potter. They are as much a part of the legend of Weidmann’s as the black bottom pie.
Come celebrate this historic 150-year birthday with Weidmann’s. Each month, they will focus on a different decade to celebrate. One of those decades will be yours!
